Meet the Team...

Abeer n_abeer

I heard about Aik Saath through my brother Shahavez. I decided to start attending because I was bored and wanted to do something worthwhile with my time. I really like being a part of Aik Saath because I make new friends. My favourite memory of being in Aik Saath so far is Routes for Change. This event brought people from the community together and raised £600 for a local charity that supports people with HIV/AIDS.

I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other young people because it helps to make a positive difference to other people and yourself.

Adarsh n_adarsh

I first heard about Aik Saath through a family friend and it sounded fun so I decided to come along. The part I like best is that we get to go on trips that are both fun and educational.

My favourite memory of being in Aik Saath is being able to return to my junior school to help deliver workshops there. When I see conflict in Slough it makes me realise how important it is to be a peacemaker. I heard about Aik Saath through my sister Sahdia and I decided to join Aik Saath because I thought it would be a good way of meeting people. I really enjoy the social aspects of what we do and the events. My favourite experience at Aik Saath so far has been the first conference I helped to organise - it celebrated ten years of Aik Saath and launched a research project we are working on looking at community cohesion.

I would recommend joining Aik Saath because you learn about other cultures and get involved in a variety of exciting activities.

Aik Saath came to my school and ran a workshop with my class and after that I decided to come along to the team meetings on a Tuesday. I had also heard about Aik Saath through friends at my school who had told me about the group.
The part I like best about being in Aik Saath is feeling that you are part of a team. My special memory of my time here are the walks that we go on and the trips away.
I was motivated to become a peacemaker as in my school a lot of people have fights and there is a lot of racism and bullying. I think that it is important to be a peacemaker as in particular it helps you to respect other people and teaches you to respect yourself as well.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other people as it helps to stop young people fighting with one another.

Ash n_ash

I first heard about Aik Saath through my Mum -she is on our management committee. I went to a meeting, found it interesting and decided to join. I really like the way everyone at Aik Saath is so welcoming and generous - there is a lot of hard work but it is worth it, especially when you see the outcome.

The best thing I have done at Aik Saath so far is a speech to eighty people. It went really well and it is a special memory. I would recommend joining Aik Saath to others because it is fun and it is a pleasure to work with the team.

Asim n_asim

My friend was a member of the group and he told me about what the group did. I thought it sounded interesting so I decided to join. I wanted to meet new people and further develop my interest in working with younger people and making a difference in the community. I really like going to the annual residential, team days out and the weekly meetings.
I have lots of good memories from being part of Aik Saath but I really enjoyed my first residential in Oxford and the team day out when we went go-karting. I'd recommend joining Aik Saath to others because you get to meet new people, learn new things and have fun.

Falak n_falak

I heard about Aik Saath through my sister Sumayah, I joined because I am interested in the work that Aik Saath does and wanted to become involved. My favourite thing is talking to other people and the training which is fun. I really enjoyed the summer residential as it was very different and exciting.
I wanted to become a peacemaker as I wanted to be able to help other people, I think it is important as it brings a sense of relief when you feel you have contributed to peace and helped to solve problems between people.

Fawad n_fawad

My brother Jawad was a member of Aik Saath for ten years and I would like to continue his good work. I enjoy being a part of Aik Saath because it means you do something worthwhile with your spare time. It's also really interesting - we're always learning new stuff. We have a good time though - it's fun and you enjoy yourself -
we have a lot of jokes.

My special memories at Aik Saath so far are being given chocolates by the group when I was feeling ill and delivering my first workshop in London.

Hassnain n_hassnain

I joined Aik Saath for two reasons: Firstly, Aik Saath came to my school last year and delivered some sessions - so I got to know them that way. Secondly, my cousin has been volunteering at Aik Saath for a long time and he recommended joining to me. I decided to join to meet new people and help my community.
I really enjoy the team meetings on Tuesdays and going on team nights out. Sometimes it's hard being part of the group, particularly when we have to prepare for lots of workshops - but it's worth it. The first workshop I delivered was really memorable and a completely new experience for me. I'm really enjoying being a part of Aik Saath and I would recommend it to others.

Hunza n_hunza

My sister Maheen was part of a project called Peacemakers that Aik Saath set up at my school and so this was how I heard about the group. I joined because I think it is really important to do something about racism.
I enjoy everything about Aik Saath – everyone in the group is kind, loving and caring. My favourite memory is the summer residential – I learnt a lot from the training we received.
I was motivated to become a peacemaker due to the problems that exist on the road where I live – I wanted to help stop these problems and to help make the community a better place to live in.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to others as you can learn how to make a difference to other people’s lives and the community around you.

My best memory of my time at Aik Saath so far is my first day here – meeting lots of new people.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other people as it is both fun and it benefits the community at the same time.
I was motivated to become a peacemaker after seeing frequent conflict taking place in Slough, I think it is important to find long-term solutions to problems. The best thing about being a peacemaker is the satisfaction you feel when you help to solve conflicts.

I first heard about Aik Saath through my mum who encouraged me to join the group. The thing I like most about being a part of Aik Saath is meeting new people and helping the community, although sometimes it is hard making people understand other people's opinions.
My favourite memory of being part of Aik Saath so far is going on the residential. I would recommend joining to other people as we help to resolve conflicts through our work in schools. I think it is important to be a peacemaker because it helps people to understand people from other backgrounds.

My sister Ruqayah first introduced me to Aik Saath and I decided to join to learn more about anti-racism and other countries. My favourite part of being a member of Aik Saath is the training and the residentials - go-karting with the group is one of my best memories!
The hardest thing I find about being in the group is remembering everyone’s names!
I would recommend joining Aik Saath as you help to make peace in the world.

Maheen n_maheen

In year 8 I was chosen to become a Peacemaker at my school and this introduced me to Aik Saath – some of my friends were already part of the group and they also encouraged me to join. I like the fact that everyone at Aik Saath are treated equally and nicely – people are very kind and I love spending time with the group.
Becoming a peacemaker has helped me to know how to help solve conflict at school and to be a person who can help others. I think it is very important to become a peacemaker. Not only in this country but all over the world people are facing problems and are being treated badly and we need to stop it. The new generation needs to know that we should live together as one.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to others as you get to learn loads of new stuff and to make new friends – the staff are really helpful and I never want to miss a session!

Maleeha n_maleeha

I heard about Aik Saath through my brother who also volunteered, and also through workshops that Aik Saath had previously run in my school.
I joined because I was interested in their work and because I was inspired by the difference their workshops made to people – it made me think that I too could make a difference to the community!
My favourite part of being a member of Aik Saath is learning new skills and meeting new people. A special memory I have is of the welcome I received when I joined, and also of the cakes that the policeman gave us! I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other young people as you gain life-long skills and you will enjoy the experience.

  Manii

I was first introduced to Aik Saath at school when they came to do a presentation to the current IB students. The group appealed to me as it is run by young people, for young people and helps young people. The hardest thing I find about being part of Aik Saath is trying to come up with new projects that will be worth the resources and funds available. My favourite part of Aik Saath so far is the learning to DJ course that we are undertaking at the moment. I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other people as it’s a great way of meeting and mixing with other people who you might not otherwise meet, plus it’s a good opportunity to learn about different people and their cultures. It also looks really good on your CV!
I think it is important to be a peacemaker as it helps to create a healthy, prosperous, developing and achieving community.

Mariam n_mariam

I first got introduced to Aik Saath through a friend of mine and I decided to join after seeing how warm and welcoming everyone in the group was. Also, I thought it is a great way to make new friends because you feel like you fit right in.
I came to realize it is really important to get involved within your own community because conflict can occur at anytime and if you have the skills to deal with a such a situation, then by promoting peace it stops violence from occurring and it makes the atmosphere in Slough a safer and better place to be in. Now having learned the skills of conflict resolution, I am able to calm a situation down and make people see both sides of the situation and this in turn makes me feel proud of myself too. The thing I like most about being a member of Aik Saath is seeing everybody help out within our community by doing different projects which in turn unites us. My most special memory of Aik Saath is going away with the group on the Residential Trip and partaking in lots of fun activities!

I heard about Aik Saath through my sister and thought it would be a good place to meet new people and to do something worthwhile.
The meetings are fun to attend and everyone is really nice, the hardest thing I guess is realising that it takes time to get to know people properly.
I would definitely recommend joining Aik Saath to other people. I was motivated to become a peacemaker as I don’t like it when people are in pain or are fighting. The best thing about being a peacemaker is that every little thing that you do helps someone so you always feel good as you know that you’ve ‘done your bit’.

  n_muqaddas

I first heard about Aik Saath through my sister who advised me to join. The part that I like most about being part of the group is the connected ‘family’ feeling that it has.
My special memory so far was the summer residential – it was extremely fun but it also developed and taught me new skills. Personally I was motivated to become a peacemaker by war in the Middle East – it made me think about problems within our communities here. Peace is a fundamental part of all religions, even if you don’t follow a religion I think that morally peace is the best way to create a unified world. The best thing about being a peacemaker is the results that you see – they are very rewarding. I would recommend other people joining the group as it helps to create a fully functioning community rather than social divisions and a disjointed society.

Nathan Nathan

I heard about Aik Saath through people from school who had previously worked with the group. I joined partly because it helps contribute towards the IB I am undertaking, but also because I wanted to do something I hadn’t done before and to meet new people.
The best thing about being a part of Aik Saath is the great atmosphere and the fact that everyone is so friendly; the hardest thing at the moment is learning all the new names!
I think it is important to be a peacemaker as you can directly help to stop conflict and prevent somebody getting hurt in the future, the best thing is when it works and you know that you have helped to achieve something.

Peter Peter

I first heard about Aik Saath when I received a letter about the annual film festival that they run, then some of the staff came into my school to give a presentation about their work.
The best part of being in the group is the fact that everyone is so friendly and welcoming and they offer a wide variety of activities. Probably the hardest thing for me is travelling to the group meetings as I don’t actually live in Slough.
I would recommend Aik Saath to others as it is a group full of interesting people from different backgrounds all doing brilliant work!
I have always been motivated to be a peacemaker and so my involvement with Aik Saath has provided the perfect opportunity – the best thing is seeing the positive effects of your work.

My mum first introduced me to Aik Saath, and it seemed to be a good group to be a part of. I enjoy both meeting and helping new people, and I have good memories of both the residential and go-karting with the group.
I would recommend Aik Saath to others as it is both rewarding and fun. I believe that it is important for a community to live in peace for the world to be able to get over problems and issues such as racism and religious discrimination etc.
The best thing about being part of the group is that I know that I am doing my part as a human, as a citizen and as a member of the community by contributing to peace making efforts.

Rabia n_rabia

A friend of mine first told me about Aik Saath and the work that they do, and I decided to join to gain some voluntary experience. The best thing about being part of the group is the general atmosphere and the jokes, plus the fact that everybody fits in no matter what your background is.
My favourite memory of my time at Aik Saath is the summer residential – the walks in Wales and the games that we played. I would recommend joining as it makes a big difference to the youth in Berkshire – it is community work by the youth for the youth; plus you have a good laugh whilst making a real difference! I think it is important to be a peacemaker as we need people to consider peaceful alternatives to conflict, plus peacemakers of every age and background are needed so that everyone can talk to a peacemaker that they feel they can relate to.
It’s really good to feel that you are making a difference, however small.

Raja n_raja
I have been with Aik Saath since September 2002. My brother first introduced me to the group - it sounded really good so I decided to join. I really enjoy the residentials, the team days out and the weekly meetings. I’m also really proud of the awards we have won while I have been a part of the team. Probably the most special one would be the Queen’s Unsung Heroes Award because it is really prestigious.
My best memories from Aik Saath would have to be from the residentials - we always have a really good time. I’d recommend joining Aik Saath to other young people because you have so many experiences you just wouldn’t get otherwise.
Ronald Ronald

I first heard about Aik Saath when Rob and others came into my school and introduced the group in a CAS presentation. I joined as it was a good way to get CAS service hours but also I thought it would look good on my university application and I wanted to do some volunteer work as well.
I like the fact that in Aik Saath we work as part of a team and no one is scared to express themselves; I would recommend joining as it is fun and it looks good on your CV.
I was motivated to become a peacemaker because of all the things we see on the news and in the papers – I wanted to get involved and help to make the world a safer place.

Shahavez n_shahavez

I joined through a Community Cohesion project that Aik Saath held at my school. I enjoyed the project so I decided to join Aik Saath. It’s fun working with people that are the same age as me and getting to know the group better. I really like the weekly meetings and the fact that we do different things every week, have team days out and go on residentials - we had a mini-residential in January this year and I went pool crazy! LOL
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other young people because you get to meet so many new people and you get that good feeling you get when you try to help the community.

Sumayah n_sumayah

I first heard about Aik Saath through a Peer Mentoring Scheme at my last school. I came along to the group initially to have something to do over the summer but have since stayed on. The thing I like most about being part of Aik Saath is the meeting of different people and the fact that “you can be an oddball but fit right in!”
I have a dream that myself and my friend and her little cousins will be able to walk down the street and not be in fear from other people – this in turn resulting in parents allowing their kids out more!
I would recommend Aik Saath to others as you are helping to create peace whilst getting to meet lots of new and different people.

Vinay n_vinay

I heard about Aik Saath through my friend Adarsh who recommended that I come along to a meeting. My favourite part of being in Aik Saath is the weekly ‘news-round’ that we do at the beginning of each meeting. I also can’t wait to go on my first residential with Aik Saath in the future.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to others as the work we do is always for a good cause, and I think it is really important to help build peace. The best thing about being a peacemaker is seeing the rewards of your work.

I first heard about Aik Saath through my sister who volunteers for them. I joined because I thought it would be a good opportunity to gain experience in conflict resolution and working with other young people.
My favourite part of Aik Saath are the weekly team meetings and when we get to work in the community, although sometimes it is hard when we have to work with difficult children.
A special memory of being with Aik Saath would have to be my first residential when the team got to go away together.
I would recommend joining Aik Saath to other young people as it is a good place to learn new skills, and in becoming a ‘peacemaker’ you get the joy of being a good citizen in the community.

Wiqas n_wiqas

I first heard about Aik Saath through my school and decided to join as it seemed a good way of helping other people. I enjoy both meeting and helping other people through the work we do, sometimes it is difficult to get people to listen to what you have to say though! Special memories for me as a member of the group include my first day, the team residential and go-karting.
I felt that there were problems in Slough that needed to be addressed and so I joined Aik Saath in order to promote peace in our community. I think that this is an important thing to do as otherwise the community will be in conflict and this would be unhealthy both for the community and for society.
The best thing about being a part of Aik Saath is helping to create a better community for us all to live in.

Yasir n_yasir

I first heard about Aik Saath through my sister and when I had a look at it on the Internet and saw some of the projects that they do it sounded good and so I decided to join.
I like the fact that we are trying to make the world a more peaceful place, but at the same time we have fun. One of my favourite times in Aik Saath is the group residential.
I joined the group as I think that there is too much violence in the world and I wanted to help stop it.
I would recommend other people joining Aik Saath as you get to have a good time at the same time as helping other people.

Aik Saath is made up of young people with ages ranging from 12-25. This team of young people are for the most part made up of young Asians from the Sikh, Muslim and Hindu communities due to the historical context from which Aik Saath originated, but this does not mean in any way that Aik Saath is exclusively open to young Asians, we encourage young people from all communities to be a part of the project.

The team meets every week for two and a half hours to train at the Aik Saath offices. They also meet in the schools and young people's centres that we work in. There are also residential training weeks away and team days out. Recently, these trips have included iceskating and bowling.

The Peer Training Team have won many awards including the Queen's Unsung Heroes Award, the Philip Lawrence Award, the Deutsche Bank Spotlight Award and were runners up in the Conflict Team of the Year category at the PeerLink Awards.
